Whatever your opinion on fashion, there’s no denying that fashion isn’t just functional, it’s cultural. Think Air Jordan, Manolo Blahnik, Dr. Martens, Converse – all iconic in their own right, but sometimes we forget there’s a local shoe legend that has unquestionably endured for years. The grasshopper.
They started out as a workman’s shoe, mostly farmhands. But at some point in its long history, the Grasshopper became the cool shoe for kids.
According to Lester, when he was in high school, this was what the cool kids wore — or the naughty kids.
It’s hard to imagine how it went from a farmer’s shoe to a school shoe and now a shoe that’s no longer out of necessity, but out of style.
So on Wednesday, Lester reflected on the history of Grasshoppers – through footwear leader – Bolton Footwear, which popularized the shoe.
I wore Grasshoppers, and just like your mom and dad, my mom told me, you know, this is a shoe for skollies… But we begged her… she was wrong, especially now that we work for them today.
