A 26-year-old woman has been charged after she allegedly stole her colleague’s credit card and used it to buy new Nike shoes at a Waukegan store. She then posted a photo of the shoes on Facebook, prosecutors said.
Shawntae Davis, 26, of Waukegan, was charged with burglary, impersonation and unlawful possession of a credit card.
Lake County Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Hicks said at a July 1 bail hearing that Davis asked her colleague if she could borrow her phone charger. The co-worker gave Davis her car keys so Davis could get the charger.
The colleague’s purse was in the car and it contained her credit card. About two hours later, Davis told her colleague she was going to take a break. The victim then left work without seeing Davis, Hicks said.
The victim then received a text alert from his credit card company about a possible fraudulent transaction for $389.70 at a nearby clothing store in Waukegan. Police were notified and obtained surveillance footage of the store.
Davis also posted a photo on Facebook of the new Nike shoes she purchased, Hicks said. The shoes matched what was purchased from the store, and police identified Davis as the suspect.
Davis later admitted to police that she used her colleague’s credit card to make the purchase and identified herself in the video.
Lake County Judge Raymond Collins set Davis’ bond at $20,000.
She posted bond on Tuesday and is due in court on July 12 for a status hearing.
