Shein is once again making headlines for its fast fashion products – this time during festival season (if you haven’t heard, music festival fashion is back and in full force). The brand’s latest product that has gone viral? Shoes that would have “deflated” during the Lovers and Friends festival in Las Vegas, it was claimed in a TikTok video.

In the viral clip, TikTok user @eacarrasco shared a glimpse of videos of her time at Lovers and Friends, wearing a pair of black Mary Jane platform shoes that she says are from Shein. She included screenshots of the brand’s Minimalist Platform Chunky Pumps, which retail for $31. The description states that it is designed with a rubber outsole and a PU leather upper. In the video, the TikToker showed clips of her walking down hot asphalt streets – where the soles of her shoes seemed to flatten out and eventually sink in.

“When you spend weeks planning your love and friends festival but the weather hits 100 degrees,” she captioned the clip, which has amassed over 350,000 views.

Immediately after, she shared a second video responding to a comment that the shoes had “deflated”. In this video, the user held the shoes and took them to a recycling bin to throw them away – The soles visibly crushed.

“Hasn’t melted but definitely deflated temporarily,” she captioned the clip.

Naturally, the internet has had many thoughts on this.

Industry watchdog Diet Prada’s Instagram page shared the video on its own feed, saying its rigs “were no match for the sweltering asphalt of Vegas, and they collapsed under her feet as she walked”.

On the original TikToker’s own account, many comments called out Shein for its fast fashion practices and product quality. Some have claimed the shoes have ‘melted’ and ‘deflated’ – even considering them ‘platforms’. Others blamed the poster’s peers for allowing him to wear the shoes in the first place.

“[Y]You need new friends, I don’t know why yours would let you go like this,” one user commented.

Yet other users also blamed high Las Vegas weather for the incident – but it’s unclear if the shoes’ reaction to heat played a part in what was seen in the video.

FN has contacted Shein for comment.
